Description
Barbara Villiers was perhaps the most notorious of the many mistresses of King Charles II. She had five children by him, all acknowledged and ennobled. Her influence was so great that she has been referred to as ‘the Uncrowned Queen’, while John Evelyn called her ‘the curse of the nation’. The child seen in the painting was added later, probably at the specific wishes of Barbara or the King.
