Description

Commissioned by the sitter ‘for the coin’ on his succession to the British throne in 1714, the picture descended through Kings George II, George III, George IV, William IV, and was inherited by the Princes of Hanover. Like Lely, Kneller was trained by Rembrandt and became England’s most fashionable portrait painter in the early 18th century.
