Description
Rachel de Ruvigny was born in Paris and married the 4th Earl of Southampton, the son of Shakespeare’s patron. The Hatchlands picture is a version at three-quarter length, and painted simultaneously with, the full-length portrait by Van Dyck now in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. Another version is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
