Batoni was greatly in demand for portraits, particulary by British Grand Tourists travelling through Rome – more than two hundred portraits of English ‘milordi’ are recorded. While most of Batoni’s more spectacular Grand Tour portraits are of larger format, some of his more sensitive and direct likenesses are of this size.
