SUMMARY:The Academy Baroque Soloists - RAM
DESCRIPTION:The Academy Baroque Soloists – Students from the Royal Academy of Music \nZephyro Spira\n16th century melodies of desire\, despair\, and devotion\nDirected by Anna Stegmann \nInspired by Silvestro Ganassi’s idea of instruments as living voices\, this programme explores the art of diminution in 16th century Venice\, where instrumental music was treated as expressive speech. Vocal works by Tromboncino\, Cara\, Gombert\, and Willaert are reimagined through improvised ornamentation in Ganassi’s style. This inaugural concert on the rare 1550s Polygonal Virginals by Annibale or Ferrante Rossi brings together historical instruments and young musicians from the Royal Academy of Music to recreate a sound world where music\, breath\, and rhetoric are one. \nAnna Stegmann is a dedicated performer and educator of early and contemporary recorder music. She is a recorder professor at the Royal Academy of Music\, London\, and a guest teacher at Wells Cathedral School. Anna has led workshops across the UK\, Europe\, North America\, and Australia and co-organises the biennial Open Recorder Days Amsterdam since 2012. As a soloist and chamber musician she performs internationally with prominent ensembles\, including La Risonanza (Fabio Bonizzoni)\, L’Arpeggiata (Christina Pluhar)\, and the Rotterdam Philarmonisch Orkest under Jordi Sawall. She has recorded multiple albums with her own groups Ensemble Odyssee and The Royal Wind Music\, including award-nominated Cds with her duo with violinist Jorge Jiménez. In 2020\, she launched a digital recital series to bring performances to global audiences.

SUMMARY:Daniel and Joseph Tong
DESCRIPTION:Daniel and Joseph Tong – George IV’s Grand Piano by Nannette Streicher\, Vienna\, 1823 \nBrothers Joseph and Daniel Tong have been performing together for over thirty years\, including recitals at the Purcell Room and Conway Hall in London\, St George’s Bristol and appearances on Radio 3 ‘In Tune’. Their programme includes three masterpieces for piano duet by Schubert – the Rondo in A major\, Variations on an Original Theme in A flat and the celebrated Fantasie in F minor. \nDaniel Tong was born in Cornwall and studied in London. His musical life is spent performing as soloist and chamber musician\, writing and teaching. Outside the UK he has recently performed in France\, Belgium and Portugal. After his first solo CD of works by Schubert\, Gramophone magazine described him as “an extraordinarily sympathetic Schubertian.” He has performed concertos at St Martin-in-the-Fields and Kings Place in London\, and this season is soloist in Beethoven’s Triple Concerto (London) and Shostakovich No. 2 (Birmingham). He has recorded the complete works for cello and piano by Beethoven on period instruments with Robin Michael for Resonus Classics\, and his first solo release on fortepiano (2022)\, the Op. 10 Beethoven Sonatas\, has gathered considerable attention. \nPraised by The Guardian for his ‘masterly pianism’\, Daniel has collaborated with the Elias\, Navarra\, Heath\, Callino\, Dante\, Carducci and Allegri quartets as well as singers Ivan Ludlow\, James Gilchrist\, Mary Bevan\, Stephan Loges and Paul Agnew. Daniel’s London Bridge Trio have been regular visitors to London’s Wigmore Hall and BBC Radio 3 for twenty years\, with a substantial discography that includes a shortlisting for the Gramophone Chamber Music Award (Frank Bridge Chamber Works Vol. II on Dutton). Each year Daniel plays with an array of wonderful individual artists\, often at his own chamber festival: founded in 1999\, the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival attracts many renowned chamber musicians to spend ten days making music in an area of outstanding natural beauty. \nDaniel’s Beethoven Plus project has been a vibrant addition to his life over recent years. Alongside Krysia Osostowicz\, he commissioned ten new works to partner the Beethoven Sonatas for Piano and Violin\, premiering all during 2015. The duo went on to perform the cycle numerous times across the UK\, culminating at Cedars Hall\, Wells\, where they recorded all twenty works for SOMM Recordings. The cycle became the subject of Daniel’s PhD and he is currently writing a book on Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas for publication in 2024. \nDaniel is Head of Piano in Chamber Music at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Head of Performance at the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music. For seven years he has directed a summer course for talented young musicians as part of the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival. \nJoseph Tong has established a reputation as one of the most versatile and imaginative pianists of his generation. Much in demand as a soloist\, duo pianist and chamber musician\, Joseph made his London Wigmore Hall debut in 1997 as winner of the Maisie Lewis Young Artists Award and now gives regular recitals throughout the UK and abroad. \nHis CD of works by Robert Schumann for the Quartz label\, recorded in 2018 at the Sendesaal in Bremen\, was awarded Instrumental Choice of the month by BBC Music Magazine as well as drawing critical praise in the Sunday Times. At the beginning of 2022\, Joseph performed music by Schumann and Sibelius live on Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ programme and last autumn he returned to Wigmore Hall in London for a solo recital to mark 200 years since Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy was composed. \nOther recent projects include a new commission from the British composer David Matthews\, a set of five pieces inspired by trees which Joseph premiered at the Three Choirs Festival held in Hereford last summer. He also performed the new work at the Sibelius Museum in Turku\, Finland\,\nlast August as part of a collaboration with the Museum Foundation which also supported the recording of a third album of Sibelius’s solo piano music for Quartz\, to be released later this year. \nJoseph’s ongoing Sibelius recording project has seen two CDs released on the Quartz label to widespread critical acclaim. Joseph has already made several concert visits to Finland\, including recitals at Ainola on the composer’s original Steinway grand piano\, the Korpo Sibelius Festival\, Helsinki Music Centre (Camerata Hall) and Hämeenlinna City Hall.\nOther recent highlights have included recitals in Germany and Spain\, at St John’s\, Smith Square in London\, the Presteigne Festival\, St David’s Hall\, Cardiff\, St George’s Bristol\, the Jacqueline du Pré Hall in Oxford\, Newport Cathedral and performances at the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival. \nHe was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in 2008 and is a visiting piano teacher at Wells Cathedral School in Somerset. Joseph’s Sibelius recording with the violinist Fenella Humphreys was released on the Resonus Classics label last year and was featured as ‘Chamber Choice’ in BBC Music Magazine.

Schnell und spielend  \nCreated by the German novelist ETA Hoffmann in early 19th century\, the character of Johannes Kreisler was inspired by the musician Ludwig Böhner\, a child prodigy who became a virtuoso composer and a rival of Beethoven. \nSchumann\, deeply influenced by Hoffmann’s writings and an admirer of Böhner\, transformed Kreisler’s turbulent inner world into music in his Kreisleriana. This programme explores Kreisler’s character through works by Schumann and Hoffmann himself. \nAfter his studies in Italy\, at the Paris Conservatoire (CNSM)\, and at the Royal Academy of Music in London\, with\, among others\, Orio Buccellato\, Noëlle Spieth\, Christophe Rousset\, Carole Cerasi and Patrick Cohen\, Paolo Zanzu was a prizewinner at the Bruges International Harpsichord Competition in 2010. Since then his career as a harpsichord and fortepiano soloist has taken him to major international venues (BBC Proms\, Utrecht Early Music Festival\, Cartagena International Music Festival\, Festival de La Chaise-Dieu\, Festival de Radio France Occitanie Montpellier).

SUMMARY:Pablo Devigo
DESCRIPTION:Pablo Devigo – Saxon clavichord by Christian Gotthelf Hoffmann\, Ronneburg\, 1784 \nBach and the clavichord\nExploring Intimacy and Expression in the Bach Family’s Keyboard Works \nJ.S. Bach Partita No. 5 in G major\, BWV 829\nC.P.E. Bach Fantasy in F-sharp minor\, H.300\nC.P.E. Bach Sonata in C Major\, Wq 55/1\nJ.S. Bach Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D minor\, BWV 903 \nIn this programme\, Pablo Devigo presents a compelling exploration of the Bach family’s profound relationship with the clavichord. Both Johann Sebastian Bach and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel considered this intimate keyboard instrument essential for developing refined touch and musical expression. The clavichord’s ability to produce subtle dynamic variations through finger pressure (bebung) and its capacity for immediate artistic response made it particularly suited to the emotional depth and technical intricacy of their compositions. \nThe program opens with J.S. Bach’s majestic Partita No. 5 in G major\, a work that demonstrates Bach’s synthesis of French and Italian styles within the German keyboard tradition. This is followed by two works by C.P.E. Bach that epitomize his revolutionary “sensitive style” (empfindsamer Stil): the rhetorically powerful Fantasy in F-sharp minor and the forward-looking Sonata in C Major. The program concludes with J.S. Bach’s monumental Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D minor\, a work that represents the pinnacle of Baroque keyboard virtuosity and expressive power. \nThrough these masterworks\, Devigo illuminates how both father and son utilized the clavichord’s unique capabilities to create music of extraordinary depth and sophistication\, demonstrating why this instrument held such a special place in their musical lives and teaching practices. \nPablo Devigo is a conductor and historical keyboardist specializing in period performance practice from Galicia (Spain). As Artistic Director of Música d’Outrora\, he explores innovative approaches to 17th-century repertoire. The ensemble is releasing their debut album Still Life in 2025 with Deux-Elles. He has served as Guest Conductor with the Real Filharmonía de Galicia (Spain) and assisted orchestras throughout Europe and the United States. A Fulbright Scholar (2015-2017) and doctoral candidate at Indiana University (USA) researching Spanish baroque theater music\, Devigo holds degrees from the Royal Academy of Music (London) and Royal Conservatoire The Hague (The Netherlands). He was a Conducting Fellow at the 2018 Aspen Music Festival and finalist at the 2021 Khachaturian Conducting Competition. His artistry in historical performance has been shaped through collaborations with specialists Fabio Bonizzoni\, Patrick Ayrton\, Carole Cerasi\, and James Johnston.

SUMMARY:Jacqueline Ross and Artem Belogurov
DESCRIPTION:Jacqueline Ross – violin\nArtem Belogurov – piano \nBeethoven Reimagined – the Violin Sonatas\, seeks to explore alternative ways of interpreting these works by delving into historical performance practices and applying these insights to enliven realisations with dramatic impact and variety. \nHistorically\, musicians of this period were expected to play with far greater flexibility in terms of tempo rubato and rhythmic freedom. Early editions and other contemporary sources also reveal that the use of performance practices such as portamento\, arpeggiation and ornamentation can be used to enhance expressiveness and character. We aim to rediscover this sense of expressive freedom and reintroduce it into modern performances. \nJacqueline Ross\, Professor at Guildhall School of Music and Drama\n“Elegant\, thoughtful phrasing\, imparting inner life to the music\, with a strong sense of the character…Ross’ close\, well-matured relationship to the music bears rich dividends”(Gramophone). Jacqueline Ross\, a versatile violinist specialising in historical performance practices\, enjoys a distinguished career on both modern and period instruments. Educated at Juilliard under the legendary Joseph Fuchs\, with further studies in baroque violin with Lucy van Dael in Amsterdam\, Ross has made significant contributions to classical music. Her accomplishments include recordings for Naxos of Schubert’s complete works for violin and fortepiano\, and the complete works for solo violin by Bach. Her research into the collaboration between Brahms\, Joachim and the Schumanns led to the publication of a new edition of Clara Schumann’s “Drei Romanzen” for Bärenreiter. \nArtem Belogurov\, Professor at Utrecht Conservatory\, co-director of Ensemble Postscript\, and research project Romantic Lab\nArtem Belogurov is equally at home at the modern piano\, harpsichord\, clavichord and the many varieties of historical pianos. His repertoire ranges through four centuries of solo\, concerto and chamber repertoire. Artem’s recent performances include concerto appearances with Concerto Köln in Lincoln Center\, New York and at the Library of Congress\, Washington. As a soloist and chamber musician\, and founding member of ensemble Postscript\, Artem has performed at a number of international festivals\, among them Festival Montréal Baroque\, Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht\, and Musica Antiqua Brugge. He is particularly interested in research relating to Romantic performance practice and enjoys experimenting with and reviving forgotten expressive devices. He has recorded for BIS\, Piano Classics\, Berlin Classics\, Challenge Classics and TRPTK.

SUMMARY:Andrew Brownell
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Brownell – Grand Piano by Crang Hancock\, c. 1790\, warranted by Dibdin \nAndrew Brownell turns the spotlight on music of the late-18th century which was popular in its day but has fallen out of the repertoire. A sonata by Clementi\, the so-called “father of the pianoforte”; Dussek’s The Sufferings of the Queen of France; and a sonata by Schroeter\, a protégé of J.C. Bach and early advocate of the piano\, round out a programme focussed on English Classicism.\nA prizewinner at the Leeds and Bach (Leipzig) competitions\, American pianist Andrew Brownell has pursued a diverse international performing career. Known for creative programming and interpretive insight\, Musical Opinion described him as “potentially one of the most significant pianists of his generation”\, and The Oregonian wrote that Brownell “impresses as much with his mind as with his hands… the anti-Lang Lang.” Mr. Brownell is also a noted advocate of the works of J.N. Hummel. \nMr. Brownell’s performances have aired on BBC radio and television\, Classic FM (UK)\, NPR (US)\, CBC\, Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk\, and RBB KulturRadio\, and he has been soloist with orchestras such as the Hallé\, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic\, and the Slovak Philharmonic. His teachers have included Nancy Weems\, John Perry\, and Joan Havill.

With its elegant mix of recorders\, oboes\, and strings\, this programme features his charming airs tendres and airs champêtres\, evoking the grandeur and elegance of courtly occasions.\nWhile simpler in instrumentation than the lush orchestrations of King Louis XIV’s appointed composer Jean-Baptiste Lully or his student Jean-Féry Rebel\, Montéclair’s use of a single melodic line with bass accompaniment provides a refined yet accessible portrayal of early 18th-century French dance and courtly music. She has recorded multiple albums with her own groups Ensemble Odyssee and The Royal Wind Music\, including award-nominated Cds with her duo with violinist Jorge Jiménez. SUMMARY:Matthew King
DESCRIPTION:Matthew King – George IV’s Grand Piano by Nannette Streicher\, Vienna\, 1823 \nBeethoven’s second Sonata Op. 27 ‘Sonata quasi una fantasia’\, more commonly known today as the ‘Moonlight Sonata’\, was composed in 1801. Beethoven probably intended his music to sound and to mean something rather different from how it is commonly viewed today as a totem of Romanticism. Composer/pianist Matthew King will explain the sonata’s background and perform it on the Nannette Streicher fortepiano\, which Beethoven himself probably played in the 1820. \nDescribed by Judith Weir\, Master of the Queen’s Music\, as “one of Britain’s most adventurous composers\, utterly skilled\, imaginative and resourceful”\, Matthew King is a pianist/composer whose output includes 45 single-movement piano sonatas; Richard Wagner in Venice: A Symphony (2021)\, a completion of unfinished sketches by Wagner\, and a piano concerto\, premiered in San Diego in June 2018. His chamber operas\, The Snow Queen and The Pied Piper have had numerous productions in the UK and abroad. Reviewers have described his music as “exhilarating” (The Sunday Times) and “teeming with ideas…with a jauntiness of rhythm and texture” (The Times) as well as possessing “distinctive beauty with disarming theatre sense” (Independent on Sunday). Matthew King is Professor of Composition at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is also a regular recitalist and YouTuber with a channel called ‘The Music Professor’.
