SUMMARY:Online Concert: Chopin's music on his own piano
DESCRIPTION:Will be streamed online – join us near the time here or on YouTube https://youtu.be/MKLh3z1N8J8 \nWe are grateful to those who have so generously given donations that made this event possible.\nTo allow us to commission artists and put together more online concerts\, do please consider leaving a donation \nFryderyk Chopin (1810-1849)\nBallade in G minor op.23\nÉtude in C sharp minor op.25 no 7\nBarcarolle op.60\nScherzo op.39\nWaltz in A flat op.34 no 1\nBallade in F minor op.52 \nPleyel pianos were Chopin’s instruments of choice from his arrival in Paris in 1831 until his death. While the firm normally lent Chopin any piano he wanted without charge\, this was only provided they remained in France. The piano played in this recital\, Pleyel No. 13819\, is\, however\, one of two Pleyel pianos that Chopin had actually to pay for\, because he wished in April 1848 to take it to England. He had already had it for some months in his home at Square d’Orléans\, and had almost certainly used it for his public concert in the Salle Pleyel in February. Pleyel No. 13819 travelled with him to London and he slept his first few nights in a London lodging along with it still in its packing case. It was a source of considerable pleasure to him that in his drawing-room in his second London lodging\, 48 Dover Street\, there were three piano by the three dominant piano-makers of his era – Camille Pleyel\, Pierre Erard and John Fowler Broadwood – all three of whom Chopin knew and who experienced his friendship\, comments\, praise or criticism. He made proud allusion to the three pianos in several of his letters\, always referring to the Pleyel as ‘his own’. \nThe one other Pleyel instrument for which he had had to take financial responsibility\, was the pianino he asked to be sent to Majorca for his celebrated sojourn there ten years earlier. \nThe making of Pleyel 13819 took a year\, with it being finally varnished on 8th January 1848. By the 11th February it had been delivered to the composer. On it Chopin composed and performed some major works\, including Barcarolle op. 60 and the Cello Sonata op. 65. \nTHE PIANIST\nPolish pianist\, Krzysztof Moskalewicz\, started his musical education in Warsaw at the age of seven. In 2016 Krzysztof became an artist of the Talent Unlimited Trust and was awarded the Derek Butler Award from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust and the James Gibb Award Scholarship. In 2017 he completed a Master’s in Piano Performance with first class honours\, studying with Ronan O’Hora at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama\, having graduated there with a first class degree in 2015. Subsequently\, he was offered a prestigious Guildhall Artist Fellowship in 2017/2018. \nKrzysztof has won prizes in major piano competitions and has taken part in many international music festivals and piano courses. He often plays in masterclasses with distinguished musicians including Richard Goode\, Angela Hewitt\, Yoheved Kaplinsky\, Jonathan Biss and Kevin Kenner. \nHe has performed as a soloist\, chamber musician\, and with orchestra\, at many prestigious venues including Barbican Hall\, Wigmore Hall\, St Martin-in-the-Fields\, Purcell Room\, Milton Court Concert Hall\, Birmingham Town Hall\, Palacio de Festivales de Santander\, Casa da Musica in Porto\, Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio in Warsaw\, as well as in Germany\, France\, The Netherlands\, Japan and United States. He has appeared as soloist with the Opole Philharmonic Orchestra\, Radom Chamber Orchestra\, Frederic Chopin State School Symphony Orchestra and the Hornton Chamber Orchestra. \nhttp://www.krzysztofmoskalewicz.com

SUMMARY:Geoffrey Govier
DESCRIPTION:Geoffrey Govier – piano \nBeethoven Sonata in E minor\, Op. 90\nSchubert 4 Impromptus\, D899\nSchubert Sonata in E minor\, D566\nBeethoven Eroica Variations\, Op. 35  \nGeoffrey Govier is one of the leading British exponents of the early piano. He performed a complete cycle of Mozart piano sonatas in a series of recitals at Hatchlands recently. He is Professor of Fortepiano at RCM and has served on the jury of a number of international fortepiano competitions \nThis programme presents two great E minor sonatas: Schubert’s D.566 and Beethoven’s op. 90 in which the similarities of the composers are quite evident. The other works featured\, Schubert’s first book of Impromptus and Beethoven’s Eroica Variations\, perhaps demonstrate what causes audiences to form such a contrasting image of the two. \nA glass of white wine or orange juice in the interval is included in the ticket price.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare Restor’d
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Goode – readings\nSophie Yates – virginals \nSophie Yates and Daniel Goode present a programme of words and virginals music\, contrasting two ages of cultural richness in England and the journey between them. Starting with Shakespeare in the Elizabethan age\, we hear sonnets and readings from plays\, alongside Byrd’s settings of songs such as O Mistress Mine and Fortune my Foe. During the Restoration period\, the concluding year of which saw the publication of the Fourth Folio\, resurgence of interest in Shakespeare formed a strong part of the newly flourishing theatrical scene. Music by Locke\, Blow and Purcell will be accompanied by readings from restoration writers Aphra Behn and Congreve as well as Shakespeare\, re-imagined for this new\, optimistic age. \nDaniel Goode has worked in classical and modern theatre including for the RSC and English Touring Theatre. He is a regular contributor for BBC Radio 3 and BBC 4 and has played roles as varied as Robert Schumann\, Falstaff\, Mr. Toad and an ugly sister. \nSophie Yates has performed on most of the playable virginals surviving in Britain. In 2014 BBC Radio 3 recorded Sophie’s concert at Hatchlands\, broadcast on The Early Music Show\, to mark Rameau’s 350th anniversary. Sophie has recently presented several editions of this programme\, exploring the work of different composers.

SUMMARY:When Musick and Sweet Poetrie Agree
DESCRIPTION:An evening of songs\, duets\, four-part ayres and instrumental fancies in honour of Shakespeare’s anniversary. \nRoberta Diamond\, Emma Kirkby – sopranos\nLindsay Richardson – alto\nMichael Solomon Williams – tenor\nAdrian Horsewood – bass\nToby Carr – lute \nMarta López Fernández – virginals (King Charles II’s Virginals – adopted by Mr Peter Gillman) \nScattered through Shakespeare’s plays are songs of such artful directness that composers ever since have made their own settings of his lyrics. This programme will include two titles from The Tempest\, set by Robert Johnson\, arguably the only versions that might have been heard on Shakespeare’s stage along with near-contemporary settings by Morley and a version of ‘Orpheus with his lute’ by Maurice Greene. \nUsing forces nearly equivalent to those at Shakespeare’s disposal\, this programme gives an idea of the marvellous range of works from this period. Dowland and Danyel are included as well as a celebration of the 450th anniversary of the birth in the Veneto of Angelo Notari\, whose volume “The First New Music” helped to establish Italian singing styles in Europe.
