Description

The sitter is a neighbour of the Cobbes in Bath, and godfather to Thomas Alexander Champion Cobbe. The picture was inherited by Mrs Charles Cobbe, née Frances Conway, who had been adopted by Champion’s widow. Gainsborough’s portrait of the beautiful Mrs Champion, one of the artist’s most enchanting female portraits, was unfortunately sold in 1913 and is now in a private collection, USA.
